Who hasn’t experienced it? That painful clinging to the past, to people who do us no good, to expectations that weigh us down. We fight, hope, hold on and often only realize far too late how this holding on steals our lightness. Moderator, journalist and author Bärbel Schäfer talks about all that with Anouk Schollähn.
But how do you best let go of what weighs you down, whether it’s in your heart or in an overflowing closet?
Bärbel Schäfer was born in Bremen, Germany. She is a well-known television and radio presenter, a recipient of the prestigious Golden Camera Award, a journalist and the author of several successful non-fiction books exploring social issues such as loneliness, the Holocaust and grief.
Every Sunday, she hosts the »Sonntags-Talk« on ARD/HR3, welcoming a prominent guest for an in-depth conversation. She also appears on television daily.
Bärbel Schäfer is married and lives with her family and dog in Frankfurt am Main.

Bärbel Schäfer, one of Germany’s most well-known TV hosts, has let go many times in her life, sometimes with tears and a clean break, sometimes slowly and quietly. Today, at sixty, she knows what she wishes she had known at forty: as hard as letting go may be, it moves us forward on our path to an authentic life. It is only through letting go that she was able to become the person she is today: clear, genuine, and in harmony with herself. In her new book Bärbel Schäfer does not dish out tired clichés. Instead, she serves up a refreshing mix of personal aha-moments, sharp observations, and a generous dose of humor. Radical honesty meets contagious joy for life.
Anouk Schollähn is a radio and TV journalist. She works as a freelance author for NDR and ARD, and also prepares authors for readings as a breathing, voice, and speech coach. Books have always played a major role for her, even in her personal life. A few years ago, she moderated her first reading “just for fun.” The fun has remained, but her hobby has since become another professional mainstay. She has appeared on stage with Jojo Moyes, Simon Beckett, Martin Walker, Sophie Kinsella, Lucinda Riley, John Strelecky and Dora Heldt, among others.
